Privacy Policy

Geography Gym is designed to work with local profiles but without accounts, passwords, advertising, or an application database.

Information stored on your device

Geography Gym stores local profile names, workout totals, answer statistics, streaks, flagged-question identifiers, unfinished-workout position, per-question answer history and scoring, theme, contrast, font-size and accent-color choices, sound and timer preferences, distance-unit choice, workout length, and tip preferences in your browser’s local storage. Each profile has separate data, and all profiles remain associated with that browser and device.

No Geography Gym account

The app does not require an account or password. A profile name is only a local label chosen by the person using the device; it is not transmitted by Geography Gym. The app does not ask for an email address, location, contacts, photos, microphone, or camera.

Answer sounds

Correct and incorrect sounds are generated locally by the browser. The app does not record or transmit audio.

Offline storage

A service worker may cache app files on your device so Geography Gym can load faster and continue working offline. You can remove cached files and local progress by clearing site data in your browser.

Backup files

Create Backup writes the locally stored Geography Gym profiles, progress, preferences, flags, and unfinished workouts to a JSON file selected by your browser. Restore Backup reads a file that you select and replaces Geography Gym data in the current browser after confirmation. Geography Gym does not upload, transmit, or automatically synchronize backup files.

Analytics and advertising

Geography Gym does not include advertising or advertising trackers. The website and Mapdle use Umami, a privacy-focused analytics service, to count visits and understand how the pages and the game are used: for example, which pages are opened, roughly which country a visit comes from, which type of device and browser is used, and how many pins are placed in a Mapdle puzzle before it ends. Umami does not use cookies, does not ask for or store names or email addresses, and is not used to identify individual people or to follow you across other websites.

Your profiles, answers, Mapdle progress, and statistics stay in your browser’s local storage and are not uploaded. If you prefer not to be counted, a content blocker or your browser’s tracking protection will stop the analytics without affecting the game.

Hosting and analytics provider

The public app is hosted using GitHub Pages. GitHub may process standard technical information needed to deliver the website according to GitHub’s own policies. Analytics counts are processed by Umami according to Umami’s own policies.

Links to other websites

After a Mapdle puzzle ends, a Learn more pop-up can link to Wikipedia and to OpenStreetMap. Geography Gym does not own, edit, or write for those websites, is not affiliated with them, and has not verified the information on their pages. Wikipedia is written by volunteers and can change at any time. Those sites have their own privacy policies and may collect information when you visit them. The links need an internet connection, so they will not open while you are offline.

The short facts in the pop-up are brief summaries compiled from general reference sources and may contain mistakes. If you spot one, please use Send Feedback.

Feedback

Send Feedback opens a Google Form. What you type into the form, and your email address if you choose to give one, is collected by the site owner through Google Forms and handled according to Google’s own policies. The form does not require a Google account. Do not include personal or sensitive information in your message.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated when the app adds features or changes how data is handled. The current version is dated October 21, 2026.
